We launch the Its A Rap competition, release a major fix to the freezing issues, and announce the winner and new number 1 ranking for Der Beat competition.

Current Competition

Today, 25th November, we launch the Its A Rap competition featuring 10 rap artists. The first UK charted rap record was Rappers Delight by the Sugarhill Gang, this was a rap over the Chics Good Times record, and charted in December 1979. Now Sugarhill Gang only had 2 further hits but neither of these made the top 50 so they can not feature as a special artist for this competition, as you need to have had 6 hits or more. The next major rap record was Grandmaster Flash The Message in 1982, he later went on to have further hits with White Lines, Step Off and Pump Me Up, but under the monicker Grandmaster Melle Mel. Further rap acts came (and some went) during the late 80s, all the 90s and all the 00s. So our prize years will run from 1982 to 2006.

The prizes include the normal £25 cash prize and two bonus 25th Anninversary Wildstyle DVDs. More details on the prizes are on this page http://www.ultquiz.co.uk/prize.php .

The featured rap artists are :

Grandmaster Melle Mel
Run DMC
MC Hammer
LL Cool J
Will Smith
2Pac
Eminem
P. Diddy
50 Cent
Kanye West

Winners and Rankings

Now on to the rankings and we have another new number 1, we also have our first international top 10 entry (outside of UK and Ireland). Please note that special mention must go to Kim Summers who was leading throughout the first week, and Graham Mather who was leading for most of the second.

 1 ( 2 ) Stewart Lennox
 2 ( 9 ) Graham Mather
 3 ( 6 ) Kim Summers
 4 ( 8 ) Howie Ross
 5 (RE) Steve Cann
 6 ( 4 ) Phil Bugler
 7 ( 1 ) Si Harris
8 (NE) Philip Ward (United Arab Emirates)
 9 ( 7 ) Michael McCarthy
10(NE) Martin Todd

Where RE (Re-Entry) is a player coming back to the top 10, and NE (New Entry) is a brand new player to UltQuiz.

So Stewart Lennox from Suffolk wins the cash prize, and takes his 6th main prize. He now has the most main prize wins 1 ahead of Howie Ross and Si Harris.

There was no bonus prize for Der Beat Club, but to make up for it, we are giving away 2 Wildstyle Freestyle DVDs for this fortnights competition.

Please note Howie Ross is back in play for Its A Rap after winning 4 competitions ago with the Best Freestyle range.

Game News

Good news we have identified the main problem with the freezing and made the quiz more robust. We discovered that the hosting ISP was causing a loss of connection just for a fraction of a second every so often and as a result connectivity to the database was lost. So we have updated every question screen to display the message Waiting on server to re-connect, stand-by . This should only take a few seconds to re-connect and then the game should return from where it stopped, if a disconnection occurs again while playing the game.

Have also fixed a loophole in the artist bias points, whereby you could get points for answering three questions right on a non-themed artist. This has now been fixed so you can only score with themed artists.

Other News

I have been invited to a pop quiz in High Wycombe, which will run on a Thursday evening on 6th December, if you are interested then let me know and I will get a team together. Now appreciate that most of the UltQuiz members are based up north, so it is a bit of a trek, but if you are down here on business during the time then let me know. The quiz is run by Kevin Hall and will be based in the RAFA Club, High Wycombe.

When the last newsletter was sent out there was a lot of trouble with Yahoo email accounts, the system retries but I am not sure whether all the newsletters were received. The last newsletter (number 27) is now on-line and you can be viewed on  http://www.ultquiz.co.uk/ultquiz_subscribe.php
