We launch Der Beat Club, find out who won the boy bands competition and bonus prize, we have a new number 1 ranking and have a big update on the game freezing issues.

Current Competition

Today, 11th November, we launch the Der Beat Club competition. A chance to go back to the 60s and early 70s for an artist bias competition. Here is an extract from Wikipedia with a good explanation of Der Beat Club.

Der Beat-Club was a  music programme that ran from September 1965 to December 1972. It was broadcast from Bremen, Germany on Erstes Deutsches Fernsehen, the national public TV channel of the ARD, and produced by one of its members, Radio Bremen, later co-produced by WDR following the 38th episode. It is notable for being the first German show to be based around popular music, and featured legendary artists like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner, The Who, Black Sabbath, The Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys and Kraftwerk in its seven-year run. In 1972, it was replaced by Musikladen.

This competition will use the prize years 1965 to 1972, and feature these artists, as revealed on previous newsletters.

Pink Floyd
The Who
Black Sabbath
The Beach Boys
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
T.Rex
The Moody Blues
Gerry and The Pacemakers
Sandie Shaw
The Hollies

Please note I removed Tina Turner from the list as in the quiz most of her hits came into the 80s and 90s. Her main earlier output was as Ike and Tina Turner and that did not qualify as she had less than 6 hits named that way.

Unfortunately there is no bonus prize for this competition, only a main cash prize.

Winners and Rankings

For a slight change I would like to start with the rankings as we have some exciting news.

Since April, I have been running the rankings of UltQuiz and Stewart Lennox has been a permanent fixture at the top of them, we now have a new leader, who made an impressive attempt in the eleventh hour.

Here are the top 10 rankings :

 1 ( 2 ) Si Harris
 2 ( 1 ) Stewart Lennox
 3 ( 9 ) Michael Hallows
 4 ( 5 ) Phil Bugler
 5 (10) Matthew Clegg
 6 ( 7 ) Kim Summers
 7 ( 8 ) Michael McCarthy
 8 ( 3 ) Howie Ross
 9 ( 4 ) Graham Mather
10(NE) Daren Schofield

On to the winners of the boy bands competition.

Si Harris despite his new number 1 ranking is ineligible to win as he did not use the correct prize years,
Stewart Lennox can not win the top prize has he won less than 4 competitions ago. He last won the Freetsyle 3 competition and will be back in play for the next competition (Its A Rap). So the winner of the cash prize is Michael Hallows, our first prize winner from UltQuiz back in August last year. He hails from Flintshire, Wales and is the second Welsh winner in as many competitions. This is his second main prize win. Well done Michael.

The second prize can not go to Phil Bugler as he used the wrong prize years, so it goes to Matthew Clegg from West Yorkshire. This is Matthew's second prize win, winning the 1985 to 1989 bonus prize in July. Well done Matthew.

Game News

Over the last few newsletters I have been saying that we are fixing the freezing issues of the game and each time we do a fix and it might make it better for a bit and then it freezes again. We were initally just thinking about the application. Over the last couple of weeks we have been looking at the servers and speaking to the hosting ISP and they made this announcement. "We have numerous reports over the past couple of weeks of NTL users experiencing connectivity problems to sites hosted by us." Digging into this deeper it is not just NTL, we believe it also includes Virgin Media and Blueyonder. If you get freezing problems and you are not on those 3 ISPs then do not worry as we believe this is wider and not only limited to these.

So what happens next then. We did some testing by running the game, pulling the network cable out, and putting it back and low and behold it the game can never get the next question and so it freezes. So the developers will be looking over the next couple of weeks of making UltQuiz more robust. Hopefully the next newsletter will be with the news we have been waiting for.

Competition Schedule

11/11/2007 - 24/11/2007 -- Der Beat Club
25/11/2007 - 08/12/2007 -- Its A Rap
09/12/2007 - 22/12/2007 -- Pop Families
23/12/2007 - 05/01/2008 -- Christmas Number 1s
06/01/2008 - 19/01/2008 -- 60s (Decade Champions)

New to the roster this week it is the 60s (Decade Champions), and this is the return of purely prize years. Every year we will be running through the decades to see who are the current champions, this is particularly useful when identifying contenders for any pop quizzes of which I will be gathering teams. I will start with the 60s but where will I go next? I plan to do at least a further 3 decades before the Class of 2007 and the launch of the new data.
