In This Edition

In this edition, we launch the Boy Bands competition, find out who won the Stock Aitken and Waterman cash prize and bonus CD, announce our Christmas / New Year competition and reveal how we got on at the national pop quiz.

Current Competition

Today, Sunday 28th October, we launch the Boy Bands competition. This is the most popular request that I get for a competition from the new players every week, when they answer my feedback emails. Boy bands have existed for many years (i.e. Jackson 5, A-Ha, Musical Youth), but the term did not start being used fully until the debut of the New Kids on The Block in 1989. More recent boy bands like Busted and McFly (especially the latter) are still having hits this year. So this is why the prize years will run from 1989 to 2006.

The full artist list for this competition below is :

Blue
Boyzone
Busted
East 17
Five
McFly
N Sync
New Kids On The Block
Take That
Westlife

making 10 artists in the artist bias competition.

The bonus prize for this competition is the Ultimate Boy Band CD, further details on the prize page. http://www.ultquiz.co.uk/prize.php

Winners and Rankings

Before I reveal the latest cash prize and bonus prize winner, I need to explain how these prizes are awarded. The bonus prizes used to be the OCC Goodies prizes and as I had loads of the same prizes to give out I made sure I would not give out these prizes to the same people, but now we have more competition specific prizes that restriction is lifted but I now have to add another. So the bonus prize winner must be the highest ranked player with the relevant prize years who has not won a first prize competition in the last 4. However a bonus prize winner can win a first prize within that 4 competition period.

So with that new rule who are the winners. Stewart Lennox is still within his 4 competition period after winning Freestyle 3. So the top prize goes to Si Harris from Derbyshire and he now wins his 5th first prize and joins Stewart Lennox and Howie Ross who have all 5 first prize wins.

Here are the five competitions that Si has now won :
Freestyle 1
Single Years
Players Choice (1976 - 2006)
The Spice Girls
and now
Stock Aitken and Waterman

Well done Si.

So with the new rule the Stock Aitken and Waterman Triple CD can not go to Howie Ross as he won the last competition, Best Freestyle Range (1975 - 1985). Nor Graham Mather as he is still in his 4 competition period after winning Soul Selection. Please note Graham is back in play for the Boy Bands competition. So the winner of the CD is Phil Bugler from the Vale of Glamorgan. Our second winning Welsh player after Michael Hallows won our very first competition back in August 2006. This is the first UltQuiz prize for Phil, well done.

Now on to the rankings.

 1 ( 1 ) Stewart Lennox
 2 ( 3 ) Si Harris

 5 (RE) Phil Bugler
 6 (NE) Matthew Wayte
 7 ( 5 ) Kim Summers
 8 ( 6 ) Michael McCarthy
 9 (RE) Michael Hallows
10(RE) Matthew Clegg

Where RE is a Re-Entry, i.e. a player coming back to the top 10, and NE (New Entry) is a new player to UltQuiz.

Game News

Last Wednesday (24/10), we released some fixes to game freezing, identifying a number of areas were the game was definately freezing. I have to say I feel, after further testing, it is faster, though some reports from players say it is a bit slower, it seems to be different for everyone, depending on Flash version, browser type etc. By no means have we fully fixed this yet, we a re stilla ctively looking at this, and hopefully I will have better news in the next newsletter.

Other News

As you will know from the last update, I entered a team into the National Pop Quiz in Litchfield, near Birmingham. As a team we came 8th, and the team comprised of players from this website and myself. The quiz ranged from 50s through to 00s and had 28 rounds. The reason why we did not do as well as I would have liked was due to the number of questions on records outside the charts, or that only made 18 etc. There was also a large contingent of 50s and 60s questions. However there will be other quizzes and a lot of you have showed interest in coming along, so I will be getting teams together in the near future.

Competition Schedule

28/10/2007 - 10/11/2007 -- Boy Bands
11/11/2007 - 24/11/2007 -- Der Beat Club
25/11/2007 - 08/12/2007 -- Its A Rap
09/12/2007 - 22/12/2007 -- Pop Families
23/12/2007 - 05/01/2008 -- Christmas Number 1s

Thanks for Si Harris for suggesting this one. Christmas number 1s will feature a number of artists who are synonymous with Christmas and have had Chrsitmas number 1s. These artists will be Cliff Richard, Slade, Spice Girls, Mud, Queen, Boney M, Shakin Stevens, Girls Aloud and more.

This will be the last of the artist bias competitions for a few weeks, as the countdown will start for the 2007 data upload, which then means we have another year in play. The plan is to have a few decade prize year competitions, to find out who are the current champions of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and then launch Class of 2007. A number of new artists will become eligible for artist bias competitions, and these will be the artist bias artists featured, full details nearer the time.
